TWO / THREE DAYS TRIPS
IGUAZÚ FALLS
The falls are located in the northeast extreme of Argentina,
in Misiones province, 1400 km from Buenos Aires. Protected
by Argentine and Brazilian national parks on either side
of the cascades, the falls are part of a singular practically
virgin jungle ecosystem, sheltering over 2000 flora species
and 400 bird and wild animal species.
Four times the width of Niagara Falls, Iguazu Falls are
divided by various islands into separate waterfalls. One
of the best known is Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat)
with its perpetual spray high over the falls. Two thirds
of the falls are on the Argentinean side of the river where
you can also tour Iguazú National Park where there
are jungle trails and bird hikes. Plan a full day in the
park to fully enjoy the wildlife flora and fauna. It is
possible to see the falls and surrounding area in a lightning
trip but it is better to plan at least two days. There are
grand views too from the Brazilian side, to which you can
cross temporarily with a little organization. But the best
views are from below, by boat.Above the falls, the waters
are suitable for canoeing, kayaking and other water sports.
The surrounding park is home to 55,000 hectares (135,850
acres) of pristine subtropical rainforest, with abundant
wildlife and plant species. Remember that to visit the Brazilian
side of the falls a visa for entry into Brazil is required.Best
in: Spring and Fall.
