What´s
going on in Buenos Aires
Premio Bienal Wussmann/Art Joven
In one of the city’s most beautiful galleries
(housed in a renovated old multi-family palace), the
annual collective show highlights some of Argentina’s
finest young artists. Each artist presenting will present
one piece and the panel of judges will be made up of
some of the older guard of artists. Even if you are
not an art lover, it is worth going just to see the
space, and the owners will make you feel as if you were
in their own home. Their impressive, top-end paper products
are also on display and for sale in the same space.
Galleria Wussmann, Venezuela 570, San Telmo. Beginning
Wed. Nov. 28.
Casa Felix
One of Buenos Aires’ most creatively elegant “puertas
cerradas” (restaurants in private homes), Casa
Felix is not to be missed. Chef Diego Felix and his
gracious wife Sandra welcome you into their home on
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, cooking natural
foods from around South America. Their various travels
and personal research of indigenous foods are reflected
in the tasty dishes served in the 4 course meals. A
range of delicious wines is also available, and a creatively
mixed welcome cocktail is served in their vegetable
and herb garden in the back of their beautiful casa
chorizo.
Chacarita. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, for
reservations call 4555 1882. www.diegofelix.com.
Tango a Tierra
Looking for a tango show where you won’t
be picked up at your hotel in a minivan and surrounded
by hordes of fellow tourists? Look no further than the
Centro Cultural Borges, where “Tango a Tierra”
takes place on Friday and Saturday nights through this
month and next. This is a tango both modern yet classic
at the same time, and the show is centered on the dance’s
ever-present link to the ground and hence to the earth
(la tierra). Young dancers perform to the sounds of
live musicians, who demonstrate that the rhythms of
this hundred-year old music are unexpectedly diverse.
Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00, Centro Cultural Borges,
Avenida Cordoba and San Martin, Centro. Tickets $35
and $25.
Puerta Uno Bar
Another one of Buenos Aires’ “puertas
cerradas” (secret bars with no signs outside their
front doors), Puerta Uno is the perfect place to spend
a warm spring night sipping cocktails with your friends,
surrounded by portenos in the know. The bar, located
in the Belgrano neighborhood, is a true gem in a city
full of already discovered bars and clubs. It has a
beautiful outdoor terrace and on weekends the DJ spins
great music of all types. Snack food is also served.
Juramento 1887, Belgrano, open 9 pm – 4
am.
Cultural Tigre
You’ve surely heard about Tigre as a tourist magnet
where you can barter for and buy cheap souvenirs or
even stay in the delta for a weekend escape. But, with
the opening of two new museums, Tigre has reinvented
itself as a cultural destination as well. The first,
the Museo de Arte en el Delta Argentino (MADA), is on
the banks of the Lujan River and reached by a short
(5 minute) ferry ride. Here you can see various works
of art created by the artist who founded the museum,
Miguel Alfredo D’Arienzo, in a setting that joins
art with nature. The other new museum, also on the river
banks, is the Museo de Arte de Tigre (MAT). This is
the more “serious” of the two, in a splendid
early century building and containing works of art by
famous Argentine figurative artists such as Carlos Pellegrini
and Carlos Alonso.
Trains to Tigre (about 30 min. away) leave approximately
every 20 minutes or more often on weekdays from Retiro.
Spiagge di Napoli restaurant
If you have allotted yourself one or two nights to eat
the famous Argentine pasta while you are here, this
is the place to do it. The best kept secret in town,
Spiagge di Napoli is a porteno institution. It is a
true old school cantina where the whole family can (and
does!) eat to heart’s content. The waiters, dressed
in traditional uniforms, certainly don’t go out
of their way to be polite to you, but your stomach will
be so full and content, you won’t care. Don’t
miss the delicious homemade pastas and the stuffed lasagna.
There shouldn’t be room for dessert.
Avenida Independencia 3527, Congreso, 4931 4420. Sunday
lunch is a tradition.
Bodies, the Exhibition
Hundreds of thousands of people have seen this exhibit
around the world, and now it has arrived in Buenos Aires
for an Argentine stint of unspecified length. 18 perfectly
preserved human bodies allow the viewer to see up close
(maybe too up close!) the complex bodily functions and
systems that we so often take for granted. If you can
get past the shock of seeing bodies in this way and
view it as a scientific endeavor, you are in for an
enlightening experience: learning about the relationship
between bones, tendons and muscles, oxygen generation,
red blood cells, and the cause and effect of many diseases.
All in all, a fascinating exhibit, but not for anyone
who faints at the sight of blood.
Every day from 9 am to 9 pm, Abasto Shopping Center,
Corrientes 3247, Abasto. Entrance 30 pesos.
La Puerta Roja Bar
Yet another one of Buenos Aires’ “puertas
cerradas”, the tiny upstairs nameless bar/lounge
known for its brightly painted red door as “La
Puerta Roja” is a hidden gem. In the Chacabuco
neighborhood on the edge of San Telmo, the bar provides
a welcome respite from the usual loud twenty-something-filled
bars of Palermo. There is a large bustling pool table
room where real competition can be found, and a cutting
edge hip hop soundtrack is spun at just the right volume.
The drinks are just the basics, but unlike those in
Palermo they won’t dent your wallet too deeply.
Delicious Asian-influenced grub is served, with a truly
spicy curry standing out from the bunch.
Chacabuco 733 (esq Mexico; no sign, look for the red
door and ring the bell), Chacabuco.
Kika Club
The most talked about club
to open in the past year in Buenos Aires, in the heart
of Palermo Soho, is Kika Club. Decorated in a modern
but cozy style, and featuring great mixed drinks and
original DJ’s, this is the hottest place to be
at the moment. If you want to be assured of entering,
better to arrive early before the crowds and the lines.
Honduras 5631, Palermo Soho, 4137 5311, Free.
“Pajaritos en la cabeza”, by Renata Schussheim
Renata Schussheim is a legend in the Buenos Aires
art world, famous for her art as much as her style—she
was the first woman to wear a miniskirt in Argentina
about 40 years ago! This exhibition, of 16 whimsical
drawings on paper, marks her entrance into her newest
artistic phase. She is a true personality whose work
is not to be missed while she is still active, and many
of Buenos Aires’ most important artistic personalities
turned up for the star studded opening.
Gallery Lila Mitre, from June 26, Guido 156, Recoleta.
Free.
Las Violetas
All the tourists will be hanging out in the justifiably
famous Café Tortoni, but if you want a more opulent
taste of tradition, head to this 123-year-old French-style
cafe. After closing briefly in the late 1990s, Las Violetas's
interior, including its gorgeous stained glass, has
been restored. The white-jacketed waiters serve the
classic breakfast of café con leche with three
croissants (5.40 pesos), but the shocker of the menu
is the María Cala tea service, an eye-popping
pile of cakes, scones, finger sandwiches and pan dulce
pastries (29 pesos for three people. Open daily, Avenida
Rivadavia 3899, 4958-7387. www.lasvioletas.com).
Pura Vida Juice Bar
Sometimes, as delicious as the meat, pasta and pizza
is, you get a little tired of all that and you want
something light and healthy yet still delicious. And
sometimes you might find yourself in desperate need
of an energy boost to get you to the gym.Recently opened
Pura Vida Juice Bar in Barrio Norte can help cure what
ails you, with its “healthy lifestyle for mind,
body, and soul.” The tiny space, with a bar and
6 barstools, and two tables, has a refreshingly healthy
menu. Begin your day with a healthy smoothie, choosing
among classics like the Kiwi California (kiwi, banana,
strawberries and nonfat milk) or more exotic flavors
like the Berry Berry Good (raspberries, blackberries,
cranberries, strawberries and orange juice). Choose
an addition like wheatgrass, pollen, or spirulina for
an extra boost. At lunchtime, tuck into nutritious salad
and sandwich options like the Oriental or the Pollo
Latino. You can also buy good looking T-shirts and tank
tops on your way out. A refreshing change of pace in
this city of carnivores!

Don Carlitos
I’m reluctant to give away this secret, because
as of now it remains one of the most authentic places
to eat in Buenos Aires. But it’s too good to keep
secret. Directly across from “La Bombonera”
(Boca Juniors soccer stadium), it makes taxi drivers
cringe. But beg them to go, because what you find here
is worth the trek. Owner Carlos (hence the name) greets
you with suspicion until you accept his offer to make
you whatever he feels is best from the kitchen that
night. And eat you will! Course after course of all
sorts of delicious food comes out, all proudly delivered
by Don Carlos, and try not to fill up on the meats because
the desserts are truly worth saving space for. Reservations
are not a must, but help.
Don Carlos, Brandsen 894, La Boca. 4362-2433
El Zanjón de Granados Mansion
Tours
If you consider yourself “underground” you’ll
be completely fascinated by this fascinating peek into
Buenos Aires’ history. This 175 year old mansion
leads to a series of underground tunnels that go back
to the city’s early settlements (founded in 1536).
Now a museum, the mansion offers intriguing one-hour
tours through a cross section of the city’s archaeological
layers. 20 pesos.
Defensa 755, San Telmo. 4361-3002.
